Released on 1 October 1962, Surfin' Safari is their debut. I don't have lots to say about this record. The charm lies under its unpolished and rough sound. There's songs about root beer, being horny about dresses, and cars! Very important. My most urgent question is: Why did Capitol make Ten Little Indians a single? |
They made another album where the title begins with "Surfin'"! For the title track, Brian Wilson borrowed Chuck Berry's melody and made a fully American hit. Woohoo! Still, now Berry got rights to the track too. Yeeouch! This is also the first time where iconic co-writer Gary Usher shows up. Isn't it crazy how the first song Brian and Gary wrote together was Lonely Sea? It's damn good, as well. Even if there's a spoken word part... blegh!
Hooooooooooooooooooooly crap. This one's a GOODIE. The title track (Surfer Girl) (obviously) is amazing and In My Room is praised a billion times over for a REASON. It's the perfect example of the teenage experience because all your hormones and crap are on fire and anda nd oh my God man.
Listen to Your Summer Dream like right now, man. I know I am!
To be coherent, I like this album a lot because the ballads are amazing and even the surfer tunes are good! What the hell! Surfer Girl (the album, but also the song) is a warm, comforting meal that you could eat at any time. A giant highlight.
